Dr. Harden attended the Georgia Institute of Technology and received the B.S. Degree in Industrial Management in 1969. While at Tech he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. After graduation he worked as a manufacturing engineer with the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation at Marietta, GA. From 1969 to 1973 he was employed at the Coca-Cola Company in Atlanta, GA as a project engineer in bottling and canning plant design.
In 1973 he returned to GA Tech and received the B.S. degree in Applied Biology in 1974. While in the School of Biology he was elected to the Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor Society. He also received the M.S. degree in Biology from GA Tech in 1976 in the area of cardiovascular physiology.
From 1975 to 1978 he was student in the School of Dentistry at the Medical College of Georgia where he received the D.M.D. degree in 1978. As a freshman he was elected the Public Relations Officer for the freshman class. As a senior he served as the class Vice-President, and later the President of the senior class. While at MCG he was elected to Sigma Xi (The Scientific Research Society of North America) because of his research in physiology while a student at GA Tech.
In 1978 he entered private practice in downtown Atlanta in the same hospital complex where he is currently practicing. In 1984 he had the opportunity to go to Chicago, IL where he completed an anesthesiology residency program at Illinois Masonic Medical Center affiliated with the University of Illinois College of Medicine at the Medical Center Chicago.
He later returned to Atlanta and entered private practice again. In 1996 and 1997 he attended medical school at St. Petersburg State Medical University n St. Petersburg Russia while still practicing in Atlanta. Commuting to Russia further enhanced his skills in treating the fearful and medically compromised patient in the office and hospital environment.
Dr. Harden has been on the medical staff in the Emory Hospital System since 1988 and has extensive experience treating the fearful and medically compromised patient both in the office and in the hospital. He also serves as an evaluator for anesthesia permits for the State Board of Dentistry. In addition he is an anesthesia consultant for the dental residency programs for the U.S. Army Dental Activity at Ft. Gordon, Georgia where he has been a lecturer at their conscious sedation training programs for many years. Dr. Harden has also lectured at other locations such as the CA Dental Association Convention and The Medical University of South Carolina School of Dentistry.
Dr. Harden is member of the board of Directors of the Emile T. Fisher Foundation for Dental Education in Georgia, and served as its President from 2010 to 2012. Its sole purpose is to fund scholarships for dental education in Georgia. He also serves as an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Oral Rehabilitation at Georgia Regents University School of Dental Medicine (formerly Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry). He regularly works with the dental students who treat patients while seniors at the Ben Massell Dental Clinic in Atlanta, GA. Dr. Harden has been on the staff at the Massell Clinic since 1979. The Massell Clinic’s mission is to treat those individuals who are economically challenged and cannot otherwise afford dental services.
Dr. Harden was first an Army ROTC cadet at the age of 17 in 1961. In 1967 and 1968 he was in the United States Marine Corps Reserve. He also served in the U.S. Army Dental Corps from 1979 to 2003 (both active duty and as a reservist), and retired as a Colonel and unit commander. Right after the 911 tragedy he was called to active duty and served as the Theater Dental Surgeon for SW Asia (chief Army dental officer for the combat theater). His service was in SW and Central Asia.
Dr. Harden is a graduate of the Army Medical Dept Basic Course, the Advanced Course, the Command & General Staff Course, the Combat Casualty Course and the Combat Anesthesia Course. He was the recipient of many decorations including the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal.
Dr. Harden is a Fellow of the Academy of Dentistry International and a Fellow of the International College of Dentists. He is also a Fellow of the Pierre Fouchard Academy. In addition he is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists.
